About Niagara Falls
What to See & Do
Maid of the Mist Boat Tour
The classic experience that gets you right up to the base of the falls. You'll get soaked despite the provided rain gear, but it's worth it for that perspective you simply can't get from land.
Cave of the Winds
Wooden walkways take you incredibly close to the American Falls, including the famous Hurricane Deck where you're basically standing in the waterfall's spray zone. Prepare to get drenched.
Observation Tower
Gives you that postcard view of all three falls from above. It's particularly stunning in late afternoon when the light hits the mist just right, and you might catch a rainbow if you're lucky.
Niagara Falls State Park
America's oldest state park with walking trails, picnic areas, and various viewpoints. The Prospect Point area offers some of the best vantage points without the crowds of the main tourist spots.
Illumination and Fireworks
The falls are lit up in different colors every evening, and during summer there are fireworks shows. It sounds cheesy but it's actually quite beautiful, especially the way the lights reflect in the mist.
Practical Information
Opening Hours
Niagara Falls State Park is open year-round, 24/7. Attractions like Maid of the Mist typically operate from late April to early November, roughly 9 AM to 8 PM in summer (shorter hours in shoulder seasons).
Tickets & Pricing
State park entry is free. Individual attractions range from $15-25 for adults (Maid of the Mist around $25, Cave of the Winds around $16). Discovery Pass packages for multiple attractions start around $65 and can offer decent savings.
Best Time to Visit
Late spring through early fall for the full experience with all attractions running. Summer gets crowded but has the longest hours. Fall can be spectacular with foliage, though some boat tours might be winding down.
Suggested Duration
Plan on a full day if you want to do multiple attractions. You could see the basics in 3-4 hours, but the falls are the kind of place where you might find yourself just sitting and watching longer than expected.

Things to Do Nearby
Historic fort at the mouth of the Niagara River with decent views of Lake Ontario. It's got that authentic colonial feel and interesting military history spanning several centuries.
About 4 miles downstream, where the Niagara River makes a sharp turn and creates these impressive rapids and whirlpools. Much quieter than the falls and surprisingly dramatic.
Outdoor performing arts venue in nearby Lewiston with concerts and festivals during summer. The setting along the Niagara River gorge is pretty spectacular for catching a show.
The region's developing a reputation for decent wines, particularly Rieslings. Several wineries within a 20-minute drive offer tastings with surprisingly good lake-effect terroir.
